Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, is a prevalent eye condition that can significantly impact ocular health and comfort. These tiny glands help produce the oily layer of the tear film and prevent tears from evaporating. When these glands become dysfunctional, it can lead to various symptoms, including dry eye. At Avery Eye Clinic in Conroe, Huntsville, and The Woodlands, TX, we provide treatments to improve meibomian gland function and alleviate any uncomfortable symptoms.

Causes and Risk Factors

Several factors can contribute to the development of MGD, including age, hormonal changes, environmental factors, and certain medical conditions such as rosacea and blepharitis. Additionally, prolonged use of digital devices, contact lenses, or medications with drying side effects can exacerbate MGD symptoms. Individuals with a history of eyelid inflammation or poor eyelid hygiene are also at increased risk.

Symptoms

One of the hallmark symptoms of MGD is dry eye, which causes irritation, redness, and watering, and blurry vision. Without an adequate supply of oil from the meibomian glands, the tears evaporate more quickly, resulting in insufficient lubrication of the eyes. This can lead to discomfort and, if left untreated, may cause damage to the cornea and other ocular tissues.

Treatment

Treatment is designed to alleviate symptoms and enhance gland function. Our ophthalmologists may recommend warm compresses, proper eyelid hygiene, lubricating eye drops, and prescription medications. In some cases, procedures such as meibomian gland expression or intense pulsed light therapy might be suggested.
